3rd Grade Three Pigs Opinions

On Wednesday, my third grade library students finished up their "Three Little Pigs Projects" on Educreations. Over the past several weeks, we have read, discussed and written about three different versions of this story. We read the original version, The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs by Jon Scieszka, and The Three Ninja Pigs by Corey Rosen Schwartz. With each story, we analyzed the story's characters, setting and lesson. For the final part of this unit, I wanted the kids to form an opinion about the stories and characters. I asked them to tell me which version was their favorite and which character they felt was the strongest. I find that children can easily state an opinion, but they often have a difficult time providing details and examples to validate it. I provided them with a scaffolding sheet to help them list examples from the book to back-up their opinion.

Finally, I asked them to create an illustration of their favorite version or character, to take a picture of it with a library iPad and then record their opinion within Educreations. I encouraged the kids to speak freely but it was their choice whether they would do that or read from their paper. When they listen back they'll be able to evaluate how they might improve in the future. I love their productions and I hope you do too!
